Buyoya rejected by 13 negotiating sides

Thirteen of the 19 negotiating parties have reportedly rejected President Pierre Buyoya's bid to lead the transition, the private Burundi Netpress news agency said. In a statement, they argued that the spirit of the Arusha accord was based on the "need for far-reaching change". However, the Burundi government responded by saying the statement "treats the issue of the transitional leadership superficially", and "ignores the main issue - the search for a ceasefire". It claimed the parties were playing for time and urged the public "not to be misled".
