The Association of Women in the Mass Media (AMCS) in Mozambique recently launched a new community radio in Maputo, Mozambique, that seeks to deal specifically with issues important to women in the country, the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) said in a communiqué on Monday.
The new radio station, called “N’tyana”, broadcasts both in the official language Portuguese and Shangaan. Julieta Langa, chairperson of the Supreme Mass Media council, the country’s watchdog on press freedom, was quoted as saying that the new radio would deal with matters such as education, the new family law currently under nationwide debate, domestic violence and health, particularly the spread of HIV/AIDS. The station is sponsored by the NGO, Oxfam-America. Nine people have been trained to work on it, and initially it will broadcast 13 hours a day.
