Seven women of the Ogoni ethnic minority of Nigeria’s southern oil region appeared before the Human Rights Violations Investigation Commission on Friday to testify in allegations of rape by soldiers of a task force that operated in their district from 1993 to 1994, ‘The Comet’ newspaper reported.
The Lagos daily reported on Saturday that the commission, currently sitting in the oil industry capital of Port Harcourt, allowed the victims to cover their faces to protect their identities and spare them embarrassment.
They all accused soldiers of the Rivers State Internal Security Force, set up by late military ruler General Sani Abacha, of raping them between May and June 1994.
