Military meeting postponed

The third meeting of the Military Coordination Commission (MCC) of the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) has been postponed because of disagreement between the two parties over the establishment of the Temporary Security Zone (TSZ).

An UNMEE statement released 22 January said Major-General Patrick Cammaert, Force Commander of UNMEE and chair of the MCC, had decided that it was “not fruitful” to conduct the third meeting until the issue of the TSZ had been resolved. At the second meeting of the MCC, held in Nairobi in December, the Ethiopian Delegation submitted redeployment plans which were rejected by the Eritrean delegation. The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of UNMEE, Ambassador Legwaila Joseph Legwaila, was “working to reach a political settlement with both parties”, the statement said.

Despite the signing of a peace agreement in Algiers 12 December, the two countries have continued to disagree about the disputed border, where the UN is attempting to establish the Temporary Security Zone.
