Journalist beaten up during pro-Kabila demonstration

A journalist from Zimbabwe’s only private daily, the ‘Daily News’ was assaulted on Tuesday by government supporters who staged a demonstration against the newspaper and in support of slain Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) leader, Laurent-Desire Kabila, AFP reported.

The report said that an estimated 300 war veterans and ZANU-PF supporters marched and chanted through the streets. They carried signs denouncing the independent ‘Daily News’.

The ‘Daily News’ ran a story last week saying some Zimbabweans had celebrated the death of Kabila, whose country has been largely blamed for the collapse of the Zimbabwean economy after it deployed some 12,000 troops to support the DRC government in the war against Rwandan and Ugandan-backed rebels.
