Teenage girl lashed for premarital sex

A 17-year old girl who gave birth to a baby in December received 100 strokes of the cane on Friday at Islamic Court in her hometown of Tsafe in Zamfara State, northern Nigeria, news organisations reported. Bariya Ibrahim Magazu had initially been sentenced to 180 lashes after being found guilty of premarital sex, but the sentence was reduced by court officials who admitted procedural errors, AFP said. Protests by Nigeria’s federal government, foreign governments and human rights groups were defied by the Zamfara Governor Ahmed Sani, who introduced strict Sharia law in 1999.
