Leaders to meet Friday on Congo

    JOHANNESBURG

    Namibian President Sam Nujoma will meet Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos in Luanda on Friday to discuss the crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a Namibian government spokesman told AFP on Thursday. “The president will be returning from (the Franco-African summit in) Yaounde tomorrow (Friday), but he will be stopping over in Luanda to meet with the Angolan president to discuss events in Kinshasa,” Moks Shivute, the secretary for foreign affairs, information and broadcasting, said.

    He said Namibia still did not officially know the fate of DRC President Laurent-Desire Kabila as a promised briefing of Southern African Development Community (SADC) diplomats based in Kinshasa by the DRC authorities had not yet taken place. “We are all still in the dark here,” he added. The Namibian government said on Wednesday its troops would remain in defensive positions in the DRC, after early reports that Kabila had been shot dead. An estimated 2,000 Namibian troops have been fighting alongside the DRC army and troops from Angola and Zimbabwe against Congolese rebels backed by Rwandan and Ugandan soldiers.
