The United Nations mission to Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) opened a direct high altitude air route between the two countries. The route was established by two aircraft which flew between the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, and the Eritrean capital, Asmara. According to a statement released by UNMEE on 16 January, the route will be used - along with helicopter and land routes already opened - to complete deployment of 4,200 UN peacekeepers and to support their logistical and medical needs.
A 25-km buffer zone still needs to be established between the two countries forces, officially called the temporary security zone. UNMEE has been mandated by the Security Council to monitor the buffer zone, the cessation of hostilities, and the agreed repositioning of troops from both parties.
