Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano and opposition leader Afonso Dhlakama are to hold a second round of talks on Wednesday aimed at calming political tensions, Reuters quoted a presidential official as saying on Tuesday. The official said that Chissano and Dhlakama, leader of the former RENAMO rebel movement, would continue talks started on 21 December, their first meeting since disputed elections in 1999.
Asked after the December meeting if his party recognised Chissano’s government, Dhlakama said: “We have solved this problem and our meetings will continue and our working groups will continue with the discussion.” His statement was viewed as a climb down from a threat in November that his movement was prepared to go back to war to wrest power from FRELIMO.
