CARITAS joins refugee repatriation effort

CARITAS, the US-based Catholic Relief Services, has joined the UNHCR, the ICRC and WFP in organizing the transfer of Sierra Leonean refugees from conflict areas of Guinea to a transit repatriation centre in the capital, Conakry.

CARITAS said on Wednesday it and its partners had been sending refugees by boat and truck to its transit camp. As the camp receive some 3,000 people daily, CARITAS said, it would soon build a second facility on the outskirts of the city.

Refugees wishing to return home will be taken on a ship chartered by the International Office for Migration, which on Wednesday took over this responsibility from the UNHCR.
