Cameroon ship, crew detained

Nigerian warships impounded a ship with a 20-man crew in its waters near the southeastern Bakassi Peninsula disputed with neighbouring Cameroon, local newspapers said on Wednesday.

They said 12 Chinese and eight Cameroonians on board the ship flying a Cameroonian flag were detained briefly before being released on Sunday to their embassies.

“On interrogation they (crew) claimed to be fishermen but it was not stated by the security operatives whether the ship was a fishing trawler or not,” ‘The Comet’ Lagos daily said. Other newspapers also carried the report.

Both countries have clashed intermittently over the oil-rich peninsula since 1994, but the dispute is being adjudged by the International Court of Justice, at The Hague, The Netherlands.
