Ghana’s new president pledges allegiance to democracy

    ABIDJAN

    “Multiparty democracy is here to stay in our country,” Ghana’s President John Kufuor said on Sunday in his inaugural address to the nation.
    “I have been given a mandate to renew our pride and self-esteem” following decades in which democratic governments have been the exception rather than the rule, AFP quoted Kufour as saying at his swearing-in.
    He defeated incumbent Vice President John Atta Mills in the second round of presidential elections, held on 28 December. Kufuor vowed to fight poverty, “our greatest enemy”, to wipe out corruption and to guard against forces seeking to “exploit temporary (economic) difficulties”.
