Alerts have been issued on the likely resurgence of ethnic violence in Lagos, the French news agency, AFP, reported on Sunday.
AFP said the Lagos State government and a northern group, Arewa People’s Front (APF), warned in separate statements that ethnic clashes were likely to break out soon in the slum district of Ajegunle, where similar violence claimed more than 100 lives in October.
According to the news agency, the Lagos government said an unnamed “youth organisation” was planning to foment trouble but the APF accused the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) by name. The militant OPC is made up mainly of Yorubas, the largest ethnic group in southwest Nigeria, which includes Lagos.
The OPC was blamed for starting the October violence which pitted its members against Hausa-speaking residents from northern Nigeria.
