More war veterans arrested

At least 15 people occupying a farm called Texas Ranch in the southern Mberengwa area have been arrested as investigations into crimes committed by the former liberation war fighters during the run-up to the parliamentary election intensify, the ‘Daily News’ reported on Tuesday.

The arrests bring to about 20 the number of war veterans and suspected ruling ZANU-PF party supporters arrested so far in connection with politically-motivated violence in Mberengwa district, the newspaper said, recalling a campaign of intimidation and murder in the run-up to last month’s parliamentary elections.

Last week, Wilson Chitoro, chairman of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans’ Association, appeared in court on charges of murder and torture of activists of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) in the area. He was remanded to stand trial on 13 June.

Zimbabwe’s National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) on Tuesday said a commission of inquiry should be set up to investigate violence in the run-up to parliamentary elections last month.
