The Zimbabwean authorities said on Tuesday they were examining appeals lodged by farmers against the compulsory acquisition of some 804 white-owned farms, the official daily, ‘The Herald’ reported.
The newspaper said the owners of 520 farms designated for seizure by the government had lodged objections by the time the deadline for appeals ran out on Monday. A spokesman for the Commercial Farmers Union (CFU) said many of the owners had appealed because they did not know how much compensation they would get.
“We need time to evaluate the nature of the submissions and indicate the way forward,” Vincent Hungwe, the acting agriculture secretary, told ‘The Herald’. “We cannot give any figures or comment at this stage. Once we complete the exercise, the minister will make a statement.”
