White farms set for seizure

The Zimbabwe government is to start seizing some 800 white-owned farms earmarked for resettlement by landless blacks next week, government officials said on Thursday.

News reports quoted a ruling ZANU-PF party spokesman, Jonathan Moyo, as saying the seizures would start after the end of a month-long legal notice challenging owners of the farms to lodge reasons why they should retain their land.

Representatives of the Commercial Farmers Union (CFU) said that many white farmers had lodged applications and that the process was likely to take time. Meanwhile, independence war veterans spearheading the occupation of some 1,400 white farms around the country have said they would remain until the issue is resolved.
