Embassy in Libya ransacked by mob

Niger’s embassy in Tripoli was ransacked on Friday by Libyan youths, AFP reported state radio in Niger as saying. The attack came as Niger Prime Minister Hama Amadou visited Libya to discuss clashes that occurred last week between locals and immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa.

A Saudi-owned newspaper, Al-Hayat, said about 50 people, mostly Chadians and Sudanese, had been killed and dozens hurt in the clashes in Zawiya, some 30 km west of Tripoli, AFP reported.

AFP said there were about one million immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa in Libya and that they have become a target for social and economic resentment for some Libyans who believe their country of six million people is being swamped.
