Will attend OAU summit

Mozambique’s Foreign Minister Leonardo Simao said his country will attend an OAU summit in Togo next month despite Angola’s call to boycott the meeting, media reports said.

The daily ‘Noticias’ quoted Simao as saying: “We cannot find a reason to boycott the summit. If Mozambique does not go to the summit, what will Angola gain, and what will it lose if Mozambique goes?”

Angola has said it will not attend the Lome summit after a UN report cited Togolese authorities as having violated UN-imposed sanctions against Jonas Savimbi’s rebel UNITA movement.

Luanda has launched a diplomatic offensive over the last two months seeking to have the summit shifted from Lome, and to prevent Togo’s President Gnassibe Eyadema from being installed as the rotating OAU chairman.
