Human rights group Amnesty International said in a statement on Friday that electoral observers in Zimbabwe to monitor this weekend’s election must not become “silent witnesses”. It said that human rights was central to anyone intending to monitor the elections.
“International monitors and observers of the Zimbabwean elections must not be silent witnesses. They must be prepared to raise issues of human rights violations or police inaction with the Zimbabwean authorities, as well as publicly condemning human rights violations during and after the elections,” the statement said.
It called on the government to ensure the protection of local observers, that election observers have “unhindered access” to all polling stations and that there be post-election monitoring.
