SA’s first black chief justice dies

    JOHANNESBURG
    South Africa’s first black chief justice and prominent civil rights lawyer, Ismael Mohamed, died on Saturday from cancer. Mohammed became the country’s first black judge in 1991 and was appointed chief justice in 1996 by former president Nelson Mandela. He was also a legal adviser to Namibia’s ruling SWAPO party and authored the Namibian constitution.
