The leader of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), Morgan Tsvangirai, has predicted that his party will win this weekend’s parliamentary elections.
Sunday’s large turnout of some 30,000 people in support of the MDC dwarfed a similar gathering on Saturday, when fewer than 6,000 people showed up to hear Mugabe address his followers, news reports said.
Although no serious outbreak of violence was reported, at least 31 people, most of them opposition supporters, have been killed since February in the run-up to the election.
