Ruling party supporters pelted the home of an opposition election candidate with stones and bricks, injuring five people and smashing windows, roof panels and the front door, news reports quoting the candidate said on Monday.
Margaret Dongo, leader of the small Zimbabwe Union of Democrats party, said she had been forced to seek shelter under a table during the 30-minute barrage late Sunday by about 70 militants.
The attackers, wearing T-shirts of President Robert Mugabe’s ruling ZANU-PF party, arrived outside her home in southern Harare on a bus. Attackers on the roof of the bus hurled concrete blocks. Some were armed with sticks and whips and one firebomb, which did not ignite, she said. The five injured were her supporters caught in the yard before fleeing. None were seriously hurt. In the parliament that was dissolved ahead of the elections, Dongo was one of three opposition lawmakers elected to the 150-seat legislature.
