The rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) on Thursday claimed to have captured, earlier in the week, the government garrison town of Guffa in the Southern Blue Nile region. Two rebel regiments attacked the town on Sunday and seized control on Monday after an 18-hour battle, AFP quoted the SPLA spokesman Samson Kwaje as saying. The town housed the government’s key Azima al Rujal (‘Determination of Men’) garrison that covered the area southwest of Ulu, towards the Khor Adar oilfields, the report said. There was no independent confirmation of the rebels’ claims. On Thursday, meanwhile, the SPLA launched an intensive attack on the town of Gogrial in Bahr el Ghazal province but was repulsed, with heavy losses, by the government forces stationed there, according to an army statement carried by official Sudanese radio on Friday.
