Major election rallies set for the weekend

The two main political parties in Zimbabwe, the ruling ZANU-PF party and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), will hold their showcase rallies this weekend in the capital, Harare.

President Robert Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party is facing the stiffest challenge to its 20-year rule from the labour-backed MDC in parliamentary elections on 24-25 June. The ruling party’s big rally will be on Saturday, and on Sunday the MDC, barely a year old, will use the same venue on Sunday to gauge the extent of its growing popularity a week before the polls.
