Community leaders in southwest Nigerian state of Ondo have accused “a major” oil company of causing an oil spill that has adversely affected marine life and fishing activity in the state, ‘The Guardian’ newspaper reported on Wednesday.
They complained to the special adviser on petroleum to Ondo State Governor Adebayo Adefarati that the oil company, which was operating the Ewan field lying 1.5 km offshore, had also failed to report the spill to the State Environmental Protection Agency, SEPA, the newspaper said.
SEPA Director Sola Akintimehin told the newspaper that in 1998 it took his agency three months to clean up a similar but smaller spill in the same field.
