US support for military efforts

A senior United States official this weekend expressed support for the Angolan government’s military effort to end the civil war against UNITA rebels, media reports said.

Susan Rice, Assistant US Secretary of State for African Affairs was quoted as saying: “The fastest way to end the conflict would be for UNITA leader Jonas Savimbi to abide by the Lusaka protocol, end military actions and disarm. But since he won’t do that, the military response is a necessary part of the government’s efforts for peace.”

She added that negotiations between the government and UNITA appeared “unlikely at the moment”.
