Members of the UN Security Council on Thursday deplored ceasefire violations committed by the rebel Mouvement de liberation du Congo (MLC) in Equateur province and called for an immediate halt to hostilities in the DRC. Speaking to reporters after a closed-door briefing by UN Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Hedi Annabi, the Council president called for compliance with the Lusaka ceasefire agreement. The members also condemned “the killing of civilians in Kivu province”, a UN statement said. The UN Mission in the DRC (MONUC) on Wednesday said that recent MLC military advances in northern Equateur had violated the Lusaka accord and compromised efforts to rapidly deploy UN troops to the country.
