A total of 15 journalists have been killed while working in Sierra Leone in the last three years, according to research carried out by the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
Most of those killed were local reporters hunted down by Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels in reprisal for their work. According to CPJ, rebels murdered at least 13 reporters since 1997, including eight killed during their three-week invasion of the capital, Freetown, in January 1999.
The latest victims were two foreign journalists killed during a rebel ambush northeast of the capital on Wednesday.
