Chiluba stands by peacekeeping mission

Zambian President Frederick Chiluba on Friday said his country would continue supporting UN peacekeeping efforts in Sierra Leone where Zambian soldiers are part of hundreds of UN troops being held hostage by rebels.

“The unfortunate incidents of Sierra Leone will not discourage Zambia from continuing in its noble peacekeeping mission in that country nor will it affect Zambia’s participation in other UN peacekeeping missions in Africa,” media reports quoted Chiluba as saying.

Chiluba’s comments follow criticism by Zambian opposition parties that his government has been silent over the fate of the Zambian hostages amid rising anxiety among relatives.
