The Lofa United Christian Association (LUCA) has begun a mission to reconcile and heal the minds of the people of the north Liberian county of Lofa, the scene of fighting last year between government troops and armed dissidents, the Liberian News Agency (LINA) reported.
Citing a statement by the association, it said LUCA’s aims included creating awareness on the essence of peace and unity among the various ethnic groups in the county, which was wracked by ethnic strife early last year.
Trouble broke out again in Lofa in mid-August 1999 when, the government claimed, armed dissidents crossed into the county from Guinea, capturing several towns and causing aid agencies to flee the area. However, Guinea denied allowing dissidents to attack Liberia from its soil.
Liberian government troops later regained control of Lofa.
