The DRC embassy in Nairobi on Wednesday said that fighting was taking place between Rwandan forces and “nationalist resistance” Mayi-Mayi militia in the Walungu area of South Kivu. In a statement received by IRIN, it said the clashes started when Rwandan troops attacked Mayi-Mayi positions in the Kabare and Walungu areas, met Mayi-Mayi resistance at Burhale, and were pushed back to Walungu. “During their escape, the Rwandan soldiers fired on people they met and burned down houses,” the statement said. Thirty-five people were reported killed between Burhale and Walungu, and 60 others were wounded, the statement said.
