Political Committee to meet in June

Meanwhile, Uganda said that the clashes between Rwandan and Ugandan soldiers in Kisangani earlier this month was regrettable and “should never have happened.” In a statement received by IRIN on Thursday, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Amama Mbabazi said it was hoped that the Kisangani demilitarisation exercise would now “serve as a future model for the disengagement of forces on the wider Congo scene”. Mbabazi also said that the ministerial-level Political Committee set up by the signatories of the Lusaka accord to oversee its implementation will meet on 5 June in Kampala. He said the meeting would hear details of the JMC’s troop disengagement plan. “A proposal on the disarmament of armed groups will be discussed, and the committee will also prepare for a visit to the Security Council next month,” Mbabazi stated.
