Rebels reported abandoning bases

Sudanese rebel forces based in western Eritrea have been abandoning their camps and returning to Sudan as a result of the renewed outbreak of hostilities between Ethiopia and Eritrea, the official Sudanese ‘Al-Anbaa’ newspaper reported on Monday. The rebels, comprising Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) forces and members of armed forces associated with northern opposition parties, last month captured Hamashkureib district in eastern Sudan but, according to the paper, many fighters were now deserting their units. It said some 300 people from Hamashkureib had arrived in Derbeb, near Kassala, on Sunday.
