For the Lome peace agreement to be salvaged, a number of conditions must be met, Sierra Leone radio reported the government of Sierra Leone as saying on Friday.
It said that the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) must withdraw from the mining district of Kono, return to the positions it held before the agreement came into force, stop its offensive and allow civilians and humanitarian organisations to move freely.
The government also called for the release of UN peacekeepers and equipment recently detained by Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels as well as all other abductees, as agreed at Lome in July.
The government confirmed that it was holding RUF leader Foday Sankoh and said its next course of action would be determined by the outcome of investigations into the 8 May demonstration in which Sankoh’s bodyguards fired on and killed protesters, and the attacks against UN peacekeepers.
