More UN peacekeepers released

Some 54 more UN peacekeepers were released on Sunday and flown to Freetown from Liberia, Fred Eckhard, spokesman of the UN Secretary-General, reported on Monday.

Those released - 42 Zambians, 10 Kenyans and two military observers (a Malaysian and a Norwegian) - were mostly in good health apart from three wounded Kenyans. They had been transported on Sunday to Monrovia from the Liberian border town of Foya, the UN said.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said on Monday that the UN expected more peacekeepers to be released during this week. So far 204 have been released.
