The Rwandan authorities have appointed new judges, most of them fresh graduates from the National University of Rwanda. “The judges have come out at an appropriate time when the [traditional justice] system of gacaca that will take genocide trials to the community is at an advanced stage,” Rwanda’s prosecutor-general Gerald Gahima told IRIN on Monday. “It enhances our capacity building given the fact that the majority of judges and magistrates were killed during the 1994 genocide,” he said. Over 120,000 genocide suspects are in Rwandan jails awaiting trial.
