Britain is to train 50 members of South Africa’s new crack crime squad, the Scorpions, an elite investigation unit which President Thabo Mbeki established in 1999, news reports said on Monday.
The Scorpions recruits will undergo a tailored seven-week training programme at the Police Training College in north London next year while another 50 will undergo Senior Investigation Officers training.
The training programme forms part of a package of British assistance to South Africa on law and order which Prime Minister Tony Blair announced during talks with Mbeki during his official visit in London. Mbeki’s high-powered delegation took part in the third annual UK-South Africa Bilateral Forum, which ended on Friday.
