WFP warned on Friday that the recent upsurge of fighting and insecurity in Sierra Leone was seriously disrupting the work of thousands of farmers throughout the country, particularly in areas where clashes were ongoing.
In a press release, the UN food agency said the worst-affected areas were the major rice-producing centres of Kambia and Bombali in the north. Many farmers had been displaced by the fighting and others lacked the seeds and tools needed to begin cultivating before the start of the heavy rains.
WFP said its food distributions to the affected areas had been seriously disrupted by the insecurity.
