Kenema quiet but tense

There have been no new security incidents in the eastern province of Kenema, which remains quiet but tense, according to HACU. Some 4,124 Kamajors who had disarmed have been fully remobilised to defend the region in collaboration with UNAMSIL and Sierra Leone Army (SLA) forces.

CDF members are harassing local communities to contribute money and food to the war effort although they have been requested by the head of the CDF administration to stop, the report said.

Humanitarian activities in the east are largely restricted to parts of Kenema District, while most of Northern Province remains unstable and out of reach of humanitarian agencies. On Wednesday WFP withdrew its food aid monitors from Lungi, north of the Freetown peninsula, and postponed its school feeding programme following a firefight this week between British troops and rebels. Recent clashes have also disrupted efforts to assess the number of IDPs in the Lungi and Loko Masama areas, earlier put at 6,000 - 9,000 and up to 20,000 respectively.
