The UN Security Council has decided that the troop strength of the UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) is to be expanded for the time being to 13,000, UN spokesman for the Secretary-General Fred Eckhard reported on Friday.
The previous authorised strength of 11,100 is expected to be exceeded soon: as of Friday the strength of the force was reported at more than 10,200, he said. In response to a question, Eckhard said that the Secretary-General would soon be asking for more than 13,000.
