Shell resumes operations in Delta region

Nigeria’s federal government has reached agreement with youth leaders in the Niger Delta to allow Shell Petroleum to resume its activities there, Nigerian newspapers reported.

The minister for women’s affairs, Hajiya Aisha Ismail, made the disclosure following a visit to the region at the weekend. She urged youths to give peace a chance and await the outcome of talks with the oil company to address their concerns.

“I appeal for understanding of the youths on the power of dialogue in finding solutions to problems,” she said. The Lagos ‘Guardian’ daily said the minister lamented that 60 million youths were unemployed in Nigeria and vowed that the government would change the trend.
