Bockarie denies involvement in fighting

Former rebel commander, Sam “Mosquito” Bockarie, has denied allegations that he is involved in the recent flare-up of fighting between the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) and pro-government forces in Sierra Leone.

In an interview with a BBC correspondent in Monrovia, Bockarie - who was exiled to Liberia last year after breaking with RUF leader Foday Sankoh - said he had no reason to return to Sierra Leone. The correspondent said he did not disbelieve Bockarie “because I have not really seen him in any military mode”. He added that Bockarie appeared to prefer driving around in his “brand-new jeep” and that if he was involved in the fighting, he must be doing so “very surreptitiously”.
