Tobacco export dilemma

Mozambique is negotiating with Zimbabwe for passage of its tobacco exports after Malawi banned the import of Mozambican tobacco leaf, news reports said on Tuesday.

The reports said, Mozambique, which has no tobacco processing industry, usually export their crop to Malawi before it was exported. But concern over low prices on the Malawi tobacco floors this season led to a ban on the import of foreign tobacco leaf.

The formalities with Zimbabwe were now nearly complete and would enable Mozambique to export its crop through Zimbabwe mainly to customers in Europe.
