Seven miners were killed in an explosion overnight at a gold mine near Welkom, about 300 km southwest of the capital Pretoria, mine owners Gold Fields said on Monday. Gold Fields spokesman Wilson Zwane said the dead men were from neighbouring Lesotho and Mozambique.
“More miners might be missing,” Zwane said. According to news reports about 1,105 miners were underground when the blast occurred at 3:00 a.m. (0500 GMT) 780 metres below the surface.
