Probe into alleged Babangida scam

The Nigerian Senate has begun an investigation into an alleged US $6.0 billion scam involving a former military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida, AFP reported on Sunday. It said he was accused by Nigerian footballer John Fashanu, in a report published last month, of looting the money through a debt buy-back arrangement during his eight-year presidency. According to the Nigerian ‘Guardian’ daily, Senator Idris Abubakar, who chairs the senate committee on public accounts, said the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had been asked to probe the allegations. “If we get anything confirmed by the CBN, the people of Nigeria will hear from us and we shall not compromise our statutory role,” he added. Babangida ruled Nigeria from 1985 to 1993.
