Taylor’s warning to RUF

President Charles Taylor has urged Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels to stop hostilities in Sierra Leone immediately and to abandon any planned invasion of Freetown, Radio Liberia International reported on Thursday.

Taylor, speaking to journalists in Monrovia on his return from an emergency ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) summmit in Nigeria where he was appointed by West African leaders to mediate with the RUF, said any attack on the Sierra Leonean capital would be counter-productive.

Taylor added that he would immediately start to negotiate for the early release of some 500 UN peacekeepers held by the RUF, Liberian radio said.
