High HIV rates in hospitals

An alarming number of patients admitted to hospitals across Southern African are HIV positive, a senior regional health expert told a forum in the Mozambique capital, Maputo. “Our hospitals are currently being confronted by a sharp increase in HIV cases with prevalences of the epidemic in the 14 member states of between eight and 32 per cent,” Southern African Development Community (SADC) health sector chairman Ayanda Ntsaluba told a news conference. Ntsaluba said the SADC and the United States - which are running the forum - had agreed to step up programmes against the epidemic, notably public awareness campaigns.
