A fire on Wednesday reduced Terminal One of the domestic wing of Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos to rubble on Wednesday, destroying cash and equipment worth millions of dollars, ‘The Guardian’ newspaper of Lagos reported.
Terminal One, built 25 years ago, housed the offices of many businesses, including domestic airlines. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) lost its electronic screening machine and Nigeria Airways its multi-million-naira VIP lounge, built in 1999. However, no-one was reported killed.
The newspaper said FAAN and Lagos State firefighters were alerted about 10 minutes after the start of the fire, whose cause has not yet been determined.
“Domestic flights have been shifted to the abandoned General Aviation Terminal which was closed down some two years ago because of its poor facilities,” the newspaper said.
