Russia’s military is ready to send peacekeepers to Sierra Leone but this must authorised by the Federation Council, the upper house of parliament, the Defence Ministry told the official ITAR-TASS news agency on Wednesday.
The Duma passed a law on 2 May 1995 allowing the use of Russian forces and civilians in international peacekeeping duties, the agency said. A maximum of 22,000 troops are allowed on peacekeeping duties and at least 10,000 of them are already serving in Europe.
The military component of Russia’s peacekeeping force consists of 17 motorised rifle battalions and four paratroop battalions, ITAR-TASS said.
