Reports of fighting in Equateur

MLC leader Jean-Pierre Bemba on Wednesday said that government forces had bombed the Equateur town of Gbadolite, news agencies reported. Bemba, whose headquarters is in Gbadolite, said an Antonov aircraft dropped three bombs close to the town’s airport, but there were no casualties or damages. A spokesman for the UN Mission in the DRC (MONUC) said that a report of a “low-flying plane” in the area had been received, but the UN mission had been unable to verify Bemba’s claim of a bombing raid. The spokesman said unconfirmed reports had also been received of fighting between the MLC and government forces at Umongo and Uburu in Equateur province.
